Caves and prehistoric museum of Balzi Rossi
Among the sites most important prehistoric Europe, Balzi Rossi also retains the remains of the Roman road which went to Gaul: exceptional continuity in an extraordinary place.
Towards the river Var, Via Julia Augusta, and follows the coast through the cliff Balzi Rossi. Due to the configuration of the rocky area, on some stretches the road is carved into the rock, as evidenced by the single leg and kept still visible downstream of the railway, opposite the Grotte du Prince.
Caves of Balzi Rossi (red stones in dialect) owe their name to the color
of the cliff. The set consists of caves and shelters, which has accumulated over thousands of years a large number of wildlife tracks and chipped stone tools left by prehistoric man from Lower Paleolithic (about 250,000 years) in the Upper Palaeolithic (from 35,000 to 10,000 years BC).
Most documents stored in both museums and in the caves of Balzi Rossi belong to this last period: graves, stone sculptures, prints parietal and many stone tools that accompanied everyday life as blades, points of arrow and scrapers.
